Asian title for Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, May 8: Shahid Zaman, Mansoor Zaman and Aijaz Azmat carved out victories over their Malaysian rivals Wednesday to earn Pakistan the Asian squash title.

In the finals, played at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, Shahid Zaman brushed aside M. Azlan Iskander 9-2, 9-0, 9-6 while Mansoor had to work hard in overcoming Ong Beng Hee 9-7, 4-9, 10-9, 9-6. Aijaz Azmat then beat Kenneth Low 0-9, 9-1, 9-1 to complete the rout of the defending champions.

APP ADDS: Earlier in the semi-final, Pakistan defeated India 3-0 while Malaysia had the better of Hong Kong by an identical margin.

Mansoor Zaman, Shahid Zaman and Aijaz Azmat all won their respective matches to give Pakistan a thumping victory.

Mansoor dropped the second set before chalking out a 9-3, 8-10, 10-8, 9-4 victory over Indian top-seed Ritwik Bhattacharya in the first match of the tie.

Shahid Zaman, however, exhibited cracking form in downing Manish Chotrani 9-0, 9-2, 9-6. Aijaz Azmat completed the rout with a 9-1, 9-6, 9-2 victory over Bikram Oberoi.
