Opener Khalid hits whirlwind century

KARACHI, Sept 22: Opener Khalid Latif made a whirlwind century as Medicam Cricket Club emerged as group ‘A’ champions, outclassing Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET) by 75 runs in the 23rd Karachi Gymkhana Twenty20 Ramazan cricket tournament at the KG Ground on Sunday.

Khalid struck 12 boundaries and two sixes in his 62-ball 110 and his elder brother Shahid Latif contributed an unbeaten 30 as defending champions Medicam CC, batting first, posted a respectable 188 for three in the allotted 20 overs.

Off-spinner Sajjad Ahmed grabbed four wickets for 17 in four overs as SSUET, in reply, crashed to 113 all out in 20 overs. Inam Ahmed top-scored 46.

Medicam CC and Ideal CC both advanced to the quarter-finals after securing top berths in the group.

In the other match of the day, HBL School Boys XI recorded a shock win when they thrashed host Karachi Gymkhana by eight wickets in a low-scoring match.

Slow left-arm spinner Faraz Ahmed claimed three wickets for 19 runs as Karachi Gymkhana, batting first, were dismissed for 98. HBL School Boys, in reply, romped home for the loss of two wickets in 17.2 overs. Opener Hafiz Ashad hit an unbeaten 48 off 42 balls with the help of two boundaries.

Ashad Ahmed, who also took two catches, was named man-of-the-match for an excellent all-round show.
