LAHORE, Sept 22: The Lahore High Court Bar Association and the Lahore Bar Association are set to observe ‘Youm-i-Iftikhar’ on Tuesday (today) and hold meetings to pledge support to the deposed judge.
The day will be marked in line with the decision of the National Coordination Council at a meeting held recently to carve out an agenda in response to what they called the government’s ploy to sabotage the movement. The lawyers say the government had indulged in illegality by giving the deposed judges re-appointment under Article 193 of the Constitution. They say all deposed judges should have been restored instead of giving some judges fresh appointment to break the movement.
The lawyers will continue to hold token boycott and hunger-strike camps to mark their protest against the Nov 3 PCO issued by Gen Musharraf to sack Justice Chaudhry and some 60 judges of other higher judiciary.
Despite a split opinion among the legal fraternity on running the movement after an elected government at the head of the PPP has come to power, the council is committed to continue the movement.
Supreme Court Bar Association President Aitzaz Ahsan predicts that the movement would pick up once again after Eid, but also cautions lawyers about the upcoming election of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
