LAHORE, Sept 16: Dozens of Islamia College Civil Lines students blocked The Lower Mall near Nasser Bagh for at least half an hour early on Tuesday after Old Anarkali police officials slapped a student during routine checking.
The policemen and students exchanged words and then indulged in a scuffle, but later the issue was settled after the intervention of senior officials. Some policemen stopped two motorcyclists at around 3am and asked them to show documents. The motorcyclists introduced themselves as students of the college and resident of the college hostel. During the process, both sides exchanged words and a policeman slapped one of the students.
The students called in their hostel fellows, blocked the road and raised slogans against the police ‘highhandedness’.
In the meantime, more police reached the scene.
Civil Lines Division SP Sohail Akhtar Sokhera said policemen stopped the students because their motorcycle was without a number. He said the protesters blocked the road for some time and dispersed after the intervention of students from Punjab University Old Campus and senior police officials.
