ISLAMABAD, Sept 13: Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Qazi Mohammad Farooq has asked members of parliament and provincial assemblies to submit statements of assets and liabilities latest by Sept 30.

This is a mandatory requirement under Section 42A of the Representation of the People Act, 1976 and Section 25A of the Senate (Election) Act, 1975, for members to submit yearly statements of assets and liabilities of their own, their spouses and dependents.

According to an official of the Election Commission, the statements will be published in the official gazette.

By Oct 15, the CEC will notify the names of those who fail to submit statements of assets and liabilities within the specified period and suspend their membership till the statements are submitted.

Though under the law, a member providing false information can be proceeded against for committing the offence of corrupt practice, there is no such precedence as such.
