PESHAWAR, Sept 4: Civilians have been the worst hit in the current spate of subversive activities, as at least 177 out of a total of 272 have lost their lives in terrorist activities during the first eight months of the year in different parts of the province.

Statistics compiled for the period January 1 to September 3, 2008 show that a total of 299 cases of explosions, missile and suicide attacks, firing and blasts have been reported at various places, which are 60 cases less than those reported last year.

Of the total 299 cases, 13 were suicide bombings. Last year a total of 28 incidents of suicide bombings were reported in different parts of the province.

Out of the total of 272 deaths, 61 were from police, six from Frontier Corps (FC), 38 from army and 177 civilians. Last year total deaths were 409, which include 253 civilians, 62 each from police and army, whereas 32 were from FC.

Total number of injuries during the first eight months was 608, of which 373 were civilians, 164 police, 44 army and 27 FC personnel. Last year number of injured in terrorist activities were 1,015, of which 592 were civilians.

Highest number of terrorist activities and causalities were reported in the Swat valley during the same period, as of the total 272 incidents, 109 including six suicide bombings occurred at different parts of Swat.

Civilian population bear the brunt of terrorist activities in Swat, as out of total 109 deaths, 66 were civilians, 29 police, 12 army and three FC personnel. Likewise, of the total 211 injured, 128 were civilians, 62 police, 19 army and two FC personnel.

Peshawar ranked second, where 47 cases of terrorist activities including two suicide bombings were reported during the same period, which took 40 lives including 21 civilians, seven from police, 10 from army and two FC personnel.
