NAWABSHAH, Aug 30: A large number of people who receive monetary aid from the Baitul Maal staged a demonstration outside the Daur post office against illegal deductions from their grants on Saturday.

The people of the union council of Jamal Shah, led by their Nazim Juman Zardari, raised slogans against the post office administration.

They alleged that the postmaster of the Daur post office was deducting Rs300 to Rs500 per case illegally.

They said they were very poor and were going through difficult times due to rising inflation but the postmaster was indulging in corruption and robbing them without any fear.

They demanded of the government and high-ups of post office to take notice and conduct an enquiry against the postmaster and refund the illegally deducted amount to the people.

WORKSHOP: The elected representatives of the local bodies have demanded of the government to transfer powers to the grassroots level.

The demand was made by the union council nazims, naib nazims, general, minority and women councillors of Nawabshah at a 4-day workshop on “Gender sensitisation and legal literacy” organised by the Aurat Foundation in collaboration with UNDP at a local hotel here on Saturday.

Speaking at the workshop, Abdul Haq Jamali, acting district nazim, Nawabshah said that local government system benefited the people as representatives were elected from grassroots level.

He said that the system had some flaws and expressed the hope that these flaws would be removed and the union council nazims and councillor would be empowered.

He said that despite shortage of funds, several development works in various sectors were completed by the district government for benefit of people.
