KARACHI, Aug 23: Three witnesses deposed on Saturday in an additional district and sessions court in two intent-to-murder cases registered against an alleged gangster of Lyari, Arshad Pappu, and others.
In the first case, complainant Abdul Khaliq recorded his statement. He said Arshad Pappu with his brother, Yasir Arafat, and other associates had attacked the complainant, a neighbour of the accused, on March 6, 2005 in the Pak Colony police station limits over a petty dispute.
A case (FIR 42/05) was registered against the accused under Section 324/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
In the second case, prosecution witness Mohammad Anwar and complainant Lal Mohammad appeared in court and recorded their statements. According to the prosecution, the accused had demanded a heavy amount of money as extortion from Lal Mohammad in 2005 and opened fire on him when he turned down his demand.
The case (FIR 65/05) was registered under Section 324/34 of the PPC at the Pak Colony police station. The court fixed Sept 6 as the next date of hearing.
Order deferred
The same court deferred on Saturday the verdict on an acquittal plea of Arshad Pappu in an intent-to-murder case till Sept 6.
The judge had reserved the order after recording final arguments from both sides on an acquittal application filed under Section 265-K of the CrPC on a previous hearing. However, the order was deferred for want of time.
According to the prosecution, the police on April 7, 2005 conducted a raid at the Mewa Shah graveyard following information that Arshad Pappu was present there with his associates. Suspects Hamid and Bashir were arrested after a shootout with police while the others escaped.
The arrested suspects in their statements claimed that Arshad Pappu, Yasir Arafat, Javed and Nasir Bangali were also with them and fled the scene during the shootout.
A case (91/05) was registered under Sections 324, 353, 786/34 of the PPC at the Pak Colony police station. Advocate Mohammad Farooq is representing Arshad Pappu. The cases were being tried inside the Central Prison.
Meanwhile, the judge of the special control of narcotics substance, court II, rejected on Saturday the bail application of an accused involved in a drug peddling case.
The police had arrested Jumma Khan on March 17, 2007 in the limits of the Sohrab Goth police station and seized 27 kilograms of hashish from him.
A case (FIR 101/07) was registered under Section 6/9-C of the Control of Narcotics Substance Act against the accused.
