ISLAMABAD, Aug 22: The Election Commission announced on Friday that election for the post of president would be held on September 6.

According to the announcement, nomination papers will be received on August 26 and scrutinised by Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Qazi Mohammad Farooq on Aug 28.

The last date for withdrawal of candidature is Aug 30 and the list of candidates will be published the same day.

The CEC will preside over a joint session of parliament on Sept 6 while the chief justices of high courts will chair sessions of the respective provincial assemblies.

Justice Farooq said in a statement the presidential elections would be in a free and fair manner.

The office of the president fell vacant after resignation of Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf.
