TAXILA, Aug 22: Educational institutions, business centers and the 14 industrial units in Wah Cantonment remained closed on Friday to mourn the death of over 70 persons in the two suicide attacks at the Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) on Thursday.
The media coordinator of POF hospital, Dr Masood, said till Friday evening six more injured had succumbed to their injuries. They were Mukhtar, Ijaz Hussain, Irshad, Moiz Shah, Waheed and an unidentified person. He said two critically injured persons were shifted to the Combined Military Hospital Rawalpindi.
The residents of Wah Cantonment and over 30,000 employees of POF remained under the pall of gloom on Friday. The POF administration has announced three-day official mourning to condemn the deadliest terrorist attacks in the history of the city.
Sources said six bodies still remained unidentified due to their mutilated condition and law-enforcement agencies were of the view that the bodies also included that of the two suicide bombers. The sources said samples had been sent for DNA test to ascertain the identification of the bodies.
The funeral of the suicide blast victims was held at the central mosque Wah Cantt which was attended by officials of POF, politicians, social workers, colleagues and family members of the deceased and general public.
Speaking on the occasion, POF Chief Lt-General Syed Sabahat Hussain announced compensation for the deceased and injured persons. He said Rs100,000 would be given to the heirs of those who died and Rs50,000 to the injured. He said employment in POF to one family member of each deceased would also be provided. The Punjab government also announced Rs0.5 million to the heirs of each decreased, Rs0.1 million for the serious injured and Rs50,000 to the slightly injured. Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani has also announced Rs0.3 million for the heirs of the deceased persons and Rs0.1 for the injured. Deputy Speaker National Assembly Faisal Kareem Kundi has announced establishment of a relief fund for the victims.
After Friday prayers, funeral in absentia was also offered which was attended by Chairman Pakistan Baitul Maal Chaudhry Zamrud Khan, PPP Rawalpindi chapter president Sradar Shoaib Mumtaz, PPP Taxila chapter chief Malik Najeebur Rehman and others. Ghaibana Namaz-i-Janaza was also offered in Taxila which was attended by a large number of people.
A protest demonstration was held at Wah Cantt's barrier No 2. The participants condemned the incident and expressed solidarity with the families of the victims. They demanded that the government should arrest the culprits behind the gruesome incident and bring them to justice.
Meanwhile, politicians, public representatives and people from all walks of life visited the POF hospital to inquire after the health of the over one hundred injured people. Those who visited the hospital included Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman, MQM MNA Iqbal Ahmed Ali, Chairman PBM Zamrud Khan, Jamaat-i-Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed, former minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan and others.
