ISLAMABAD, Aug 18: National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza accepted the resignation of President Pervez Musharraf on Monday night and Senate Chairman Muhammadmian Soomro took over as the acting president.

She accepted the resignation at 10:30 pm because she was attending a dinner party at Prime Minister’s House when the resignation landed in her office.

The speaker will send the copies of the resignation to the Election Commission, Prime Minister House, Federal Secretariat and Cabinet Division on Tuesday.

When asked if she would be candidate for the post of president, Dr Mirza said she really did not know whether she was being considered for the office.
