KARACHI, May 6: The Pakistan People’s Party has warned the regime against serious implications for the country’s security due to its policy of what it called pampering of separatist and anti-federation elements to perpetuate its power.

The PPP coordination committee, which met in Bilawal House on Monday, sounded the warning while appealing to the people to be vigilant against such moves of the regime.

The meeting, presided over by Syed Qaim Ali Shah, also reviewed the post- referendum situation, and pointed at the “contradiction in the claims of the Inter-Services Public Relations and the Ministry of Information.”

The party was of the view that people had actually stayed away from the referendum which was being used by the government as an emphatic legitimization of the Musharraf regime. It described the government’s claim as a hoax and fraud with the people of Pakistan.

The PPP coordination committee maintained that Gen Musharraf should have stepped down after what it termed people’s rejection of his policies, but it deplored that the regime had not shown that moral courage and “has instead stepped up secretive deal with the elements who are working against the integrity of the country.” It was also critical of the ISPR chief, Maj-Gen Rashid Qureshi.

The meeting claimed that the regime could not marginalize the PPP and its chairperson, Benazir Bhutto, and claimed that only she could steer the country out of the woods.
