SUKKUR, Aug 2: Hundreds of people, including women and children, staged a demonstration and sit-in at Qadria Mohalla Ghotki on Saturday against the killing of a young man.

The protesters claimed that some Rangers personnel killed Bashir Ahmed Shaikh on Friday.

Reports claimed that three Rangers personnel, in plain clothes, entered into Qadria Mohalla and snatched cellphone and Rs1,000 from Bashir Ahmed Shaikh, son of Ghulam Sarwar Shaikh.

Bashir raised alarm and other local people came out of their houses. The Rangers personnel called other Rangers personnel on cellphone saying that they had encountered dacoits.

Some Rangers personnel reached there in a vehicle and opened fire due to which Bashir Ahmed Shaikh was injured while the ranger personnel escaped, reports claimed.

The injured was shifted to Civil Hospital Sukkur where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning.

Hundreds of people, belonging to Shaikh community, staged a protest demonstration in Qadria Mohalla.

They were shouting slogans against the Rangers personnel and staged a sit-in and put the corpse on the road suspending vehicular traffic for two hours.

The DSP of Ghotki Abdul Khaliq Wagan along with a police party reached there and negotiated with the protestors and assured them of justice. After that the protesters ended their protest.

The DSP told Dawn that according to initial investigations a Rangers’ personnel, Mohammad Khan, told him that he had gone to get balance for his cellphone, when Bashir Ahmed and others tried to snatch his mobile phone from him at gunpoint. He claimed that he raised alarm and on this his fellows came and exchange of gunfire took place and resultantly Bashir Shaikh was killed. However, no case was registered.
