Kachhi Canal workers face threats

Published August 1, 2008

DERA GHAZI KHAN, July 31: `Baloch insurgents’ have told Mazari tribesmen and Sindhi and Pashtoon people to keep at a distance from government troops deployed at the under-construction Kachhi Canal in Rajanpur district.

The insurgents spread this warning through pamphlets, which have sympathetic words for Sindhi, Pashtoon and Mazari people. As a result, locals and workers are feeling insecure.

Some Kachhi Canal workers were injured in a land mine blast here a couple of days ago.

Sources told Dawn that senior Punjab police officials and the chief secretary were expected in the district today (Friday) to discuss the deteriorating law and order situation here.
