KARACHI, July 25: A locally improvised explosive device which was placed close to a wine shop in Korangi’s Christian Colony was defused by the bomb disposal unit, police and bomb disposal unit said.
A passerby spotted an unusual canister placed near the wine shop in Christian Colony, also known as Nasir Colony, and informed the police helpline about it at around 10am.
Area police rushed to the spot and secured the area informing the bomb disposal unit that the threat appeared genuine.
“Only heat or ignition was required to set off the explosive device. Five kilos of explosive material was attached with three detonators and the whole stuff was packed in a plastic canister. In addition, a petrol bottle was placed near the bomb to intensify the impact of the explosion,” Korangi SP Pervez Umrani told Dawn.
The explosion could have caused a substantial damage in terms of life and property, he observed. Following the incident, the authorities, anticipating similar acts of sabotage, increased vigilance at the wine shops across the city. It is pertinent to mention here that generally wine shops remain closed on Fridays.
Man shot dead
A middle-aged man was gunned down on a service lane in Defence View late Thursday night, adds PPI.
Two armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on Mohammad Adnan Nasim, who was on his way home, in the Baloch Colony police limits. The 37-year-old, a resident of Garden East, died before he could be shifted to hospital.
The body was later shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination. Hospital sources said that the victim received a bullet in his chest.
The area police have lodged an FIR (No 206/2008) against unidentified armed men under Section 302/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code on a complaint of Mohammad Ikram Nasim, the bother of deceased.
