GUJRANWALA, July 16: The body of a minor boy, who was kidnapped allegedly by his relatives, was found in a canal here on Wednesday.
The police claimed to have arrested the kidnappers-cum-killers of the boy.
Eleven-year-old Awais, son of Subedar Muhammad Iqbal, was kidnapped by three men when he was playing outside his house. Sadar police arrested Zafar in connection with the boy’s abduction. Zafar ‘confessed’ to kidnapping Awais and identified his accomplices as Akram and Khuram. Later, the police arrested them.
Separately, police claimed to have arrested six people in connection with the abduction and ensuing murder of an eight-year-old son of a property dealer.
RECOVERED: A retired army officer, who was kidnapped on Tuesday night, was recovered from Noshera Virkan on Wednesday, Regional Police Officer Zulfiqar Ahmed Cheema told a press conference here.
Naeem Zakaullah, who owns a gas station in Ghakhar Town, was on his way to Lahore by his car when he was kidnapped near Sadhoke. human agents held: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested three more human agents on Wednesday. According to FIA Gujranwala passport cell additional director Husain Asghar, a team, led by inspector Shaukat, raided Khiali Shahpur and arrested minority councillor Chaman Masih who got Rs0.5 million from Irfan Masih to send him to Korea.
He said Muhammad Jamal was arrested from Gujrat as he received hefty amount from Sajawal, Irfan Mubasher and Hamad Muslim to send them to Spain and Italy.
He said Muhammad Abbas was arrested from Mandi Bahauddin who obtained Rs900,000 from Asif to send him to Spain. But Asif was arrested on the way and later deported.
Asghar said the agency was redressing public complaints on a priority basis.
CARTERS: Donkey carters held a demonstration on Wednesday outside the office of the district coordination officer and threw traffic out of gear on GT Road to protest against recovery of licence fee and demanded its withdrawal.
The carters gathered at Pondanwala Chowk and later reached the DCO office after marching along GT Road.
DCO Pervaiz Ahmad Rathore assured them that their genuine demands would be accepted soon.
FLOUR: Millers on Wednesday started the sale of 20kg flour bag at Rs365 outside their mills throughout the district following successful talks between the food department and the mills association.
This was stated by flour mills association spokesman Ahmad Shahzad at a briefing and pointed out that the flour bags were being sold at 50 places in the district from 10am to 5pm.
He said two sale centres were set up in the city at Tower Chowk and Bank Square where a 20kg flour bag would be sold for Rs375 instead Rs395.
He said shopkeepers were selling flour bags in the blackmarket, while the mills association wanted to provide the commodity to people at cheaper rates to mitigate their financial problems.
He was of the view that the association would cooperate with the food department and the district administration to continue the supply of flour bags.
PTCL: The Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) employees continued locking their offices and protested on GT Road on the second day here on Wednesday against the unified pay scale (UPS).
Reports said the PTCL employees came to the central exchange from their respective telephone exchanges in the form of processions and held a demonstration on GT Road. They condemned Rangers for resorting to baton charge and tear gas shelling on their colleagues in Islamabad.
They chanted slogans against President Musharraf and the government and demanded that all forcibly retired workers should be restored.
They threatened that they would jam all communication system across the country if their demands were not accepted.
EXECUTION: A sessions court issued death warrant for a condemned prisoner involved in killing of his wife and fixed July 31 for his execution here on Wednesday.
According to the prosecution, Mushtaq Ahmad killed his wife Rukhsana Bibi over a domestic issue in Lohianwala locality of Satellite Town on Dec 26, 1998.
The sessions court handed down death sentence to him on June 13, 2002.
The Lahore High Court and Supreme Court upheld the decision of the lower court. The president also rejected his mercy appeal.
