Dortmund clinch German title

BERLIN, May 4: Borussia Dortmund won their sixth German title in dramatic fashion by fighting back from a goal down for a 2-1 victory over Werder Bremen in their final game of the season Saturday.

Brazilian striker Ewerthon hit the winner from close range in the 74th minute to put the Ruhr club one point ahead of second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, the Champions League finalists, who beat Hertha Berlin 2-1.

Defending champions Bayern Munich finished third, two points off the pace, despite a 3-2 victory over Hansa Rostock. They end the season without any silverware for the first time since 1995.

Canadian midfielder Paul Stalteri put Werder ahead after 18 minutes. Czech striker Jan Koller restored hope shortly before halftime for Dortmund, who last won a title by claiming the European Cup in 1997.

Leverkusen, who had finished runners-up three times in the previous five seasons, added weight to their reputation as the nearly men of German soccer.

But they challenge holders Schalke 04 in the German Cup final next Saturday in Berlin before taking on Real Madrid in the Champions League final on May 15 in Glasgow.
