KARACHI, July 13: Favourite filly Sweet Girl was deprived of completing a hat-trick when mare The Princess Arab ended her pretensions in a late burst in the only upset in Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

The shock defeat which came in the last race also denied Dawn a clean sweep as all other tips returned with flying colours in the preceding five races.

Having won two races on a trot under rider Arshad, Sweet Girl led the pack of nine horses with Ghulam Shabbir II in the saddle following the withdrawal of mare Savabeel. Shabbir had replaced Nasir at the last moment.

However, after negotiating the bend and getting into the straight chase for home she was overtaken by The Princess Arab with Zaki Zakir astride and further pushed to the third slot by mare Afroze Jehan. Vice Admiral completed the frame.

The Princess Arab beat Afroze Jehan by three lengths to land her maiden title of the season.

Earlier, in the supporting race, public fancy three-year-old colt Star Of Galaxy lived up to his top billing by repeating his winning act for the second time in succession.

Trained by Mushtaq Ali Khan, he galloped to a facile three-and-a-half lengths victory over colt Dark Secret. They were followed by Khan Jee and Saad Prince. Colt Speed Of Arab was not on job.He sprinted to glory by jockey M. Nasir who completed a brace after powering bay Trust Again to victory in the second.

Three-year-old chestnut colt The Reyan atoned for the two loses when he was piloted home by Zubair Ahmed to a splendid 10 lengths victory over King Of Cool in the fourth race. They were chased by Kicking King and Hamza Joy.

The opener, as expected, ended in a blaze of glory for mare Bewitched who was steered to eight lengths victory over Racing Leader by rider Shabbir.

Trust Again picked up spoils in the next sprinting past Love Pakistan by two-and-a-half lengths while Persian Blue made it two wins on the trot by getting the better of NYX by four lengths.
