One killed as building caves in

GUJRANWALA, July 8: A labourer was killed and three others were injured when the basement of an under-construction commercial plaza caved in at Wapda Town here on Tuesday. The collapse of the structure left the labourers buried under the debris. Locals and Rescue 1122 undertook rescue work but Abdur Rehman, of Naushehra Virkan, was found dead when debris was removed. Bilal, Ijaz and Lal Khan were injured and were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital in critical condition. Dawn learnt the building collapsed due to the use of substandard material.

GRID STATIONS: The Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) plans six grid stations at different places to improve power supply with the help of South Korea.

The plan would cost $45 million and would be completed in 2010, Gepco Chief Executive Officer Rana Muhammad Ashraf Zahid told a briefing after a meeting with Korean delegates. He said these grid stations would be built in Sialkot, Phalia, Barnala, Hafizabad, Chianwali and Gujrat as the Korean delegation approved the sites.

MACHINERY: The Punjab government released Rs80 million to buy machinery for cleanliness. This was stated by Municipal Executive District Officer Waheed Butt. He said 15 trucks would be bought to lift garbage from streets and bazaars besides handcarts and a vehicle for sprinkling water.

He said the government had acquired 12 acres near Eminabad to dump the garbage. He said the cleanliness issue of Qila Didar Singh and Ladhay Wala Warriach was the responsibility of their administrations.
