KARACHI, July 1: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Tuesday assured the workers of the State Bank of Pakistan of all-out government support for the resolution of all their problems.

He was talking to a delegation of the bank’s workers during his visit to the central bank on Tuesday.

The prime minister said that the government would definitely ascertain if the workers had been deprived of their due rights owing to a decision made by the previous government under which the responsibilities and functions of the bank were divided with the creation of a subsidiary.

The chief of the State Bank’s Democratic Workers Union, Liaquat Sahi, who had led the workers’ delegation, told Dawn that the workers’ team informed the prime minister that when the subsidiary, which was a part of the bank, was created workers of the bank were distributed and some were retained by the bank while others were sent to the subsidiary and the workers’ rights were violated and facilities and benefits were curtailed.

The workers’ team — comprising Sohrab Ali, Musa Baloch, Ghulam Yasin and Zarin Shah — also informed the prime minister that his announcement regarding the restoration of labour unions was not being implemented by various financial institutions and workers continued to suffer.
