KARACHI, June 30: As the mercury surged to 35.2 degrees Celsius with 62 per cent humidity on Monday, people in the city endured yet another day of unannounced and prolonged power outages.

The KESC registered a shortfall of 350MW in meeting the overall power demand of the city, forcing the power utility to observe several spells of load-shedding, each spread over three hours, during the day and night.

A source privy to the power supply situation said that power supply from the Korangi Thermal Power Station of the KESC went dead at 3pm on Monday, further widening the gap in the power supply and demand. The power supply from the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant has already been suspended since the afternoon of June 22.

Two outdated power generation units were functioning at the Korangi Thermal Power Station, each providing 80 megawatts power supply.

Complaints received from power consumers residing in various areas of the city gave the impression that the power supply situation had deteriorated since Sunday when many areas, including Defence and Nagan Chowrangi, remained without electricity for more than 10 hours.
