LAHORE, June 21: Three-year-old colt Velocity looks like the better proposition when in quest of his maiden victory during the day/night Lahore Summer Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday evening.

Velocity, the chestnut colt from reputed sire Vitellozzi out-of-Gambling Princess, is contesting in the Salam Plate, a class VI, division I-A, to go over 1,000 metres distance. The colt has not won a race or been placed on the board yet, even in his two previous outings under the old name ‘Aunab’. The new name besides proving lucky for the colt, brings to mind high speed and the horse’s potential, which he has inherited through a bloodline of capable race horses. Naseen Apna Apna, Volcano and Love Minister will be fighting for places in this third race of the day.

There are eight runners in the field in the feature event, the Kharian Plate, class V, division I, to go over the sprinting distance of 1,000 metres. Of them three, namely, Noor, Munsaf and War Admiral, seem to be on chance.

The mare Noor, who was beaten by Chinkara last Sunday, should make amends this time by winning the race. This will be the fifth race in the racing order.

The sixth and last race, the Kharian Plate, class V division II, has a small field of six runners. Perhaps, the other horse owners felt that their charges couldn’t match Pind De Kuri’s speed so they have avoided entering in contest with the filly, whose present form makes her look like the best contestant around.

Pind De Kuri is owned by the Lahore Race Club (LRC). But the matter of who orders the filly’s rider is considered top secret. The News is good on classification but he is running after an about three months lay off from the course. Richy Dancer is also a speedy horse but at the same time very inconsistent in performance.

The fourth race has the largest field of 13 runners, composed mostly of newcomers on the run. Looking at their present showing and performance, three of them, namely, Rough Tough, Jang Ju and Victory King, are on chance. Rough Tough may have the better of his rivals.

The four-year-old filly Last Option looks like the first option in the second race. She has a good chance of breaking her duck on the victory statistics table when she appears in the Salam Plate, class VI, division I-B. The only handicap she has is being slow at the start and that’s probably why she failed to win any race during the season. Among her rivals, Faryal and High Jet are good runners.

The first race, the Salam Plate, class VI, division III and IV, has a dozen runners if there are no last-minute withdrawals. The field looks packed with half a dozen speedsters, the main in form contenders being Untar, Dam Dama Dam and Chocolate Boy.

A card of six events will be decided in the last but one Summer Meeting before the season ends. All races will be contested over the sprinting distance of 1,000 metres. Meanwhile the Lahore Race club has issued notification for the owners, trainers and race-goers that races from now onwards will be held on the second course (dirt track). The first race commences at 5.30pm.
