NEW DELHI, Oct 23: Indian teenager Karun Chandok claimed the Asian Formula 2000 championship with a record number of wins, team officials said on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old won eight of the 14 races driving for JK Tyre team to lead an Indian one-two in the championship which ended Sunday.

Chandok also won the “most promising Asian rookie” title after his performance on the circuit.

His 24-year-old team mate Asif Nazir came second in the event run in the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea and China on cars fitted with stock two-litre Ford engines.

The Indian team came first in a field of six teams in the Asian event which is seen as an important early step for young Formula One aspirants.

Chandok’s number of wins was one better than the seven races claimed by fellow Indian Narain Karthikeyan when he took the title in 1996.—Reuters
