LAHORE, May 24: Leading local jockey Shahid Rehman is attempting to break his record for riding more winners during a season surpassing his previous tally of 100 to reach super stardom by the end of the ongoing season by June 29.

Shahid had achieved the feat of scoring an exact 100 victories during the 2006-07 season.

He has so far won 73 races in Lahore, placed second on 28 occasions and third 14 times. With five weeks still to go, Shahid requires only another 17 to level up his past total. A graduate of the Punjab University, Shahid started his riding career as an apprentice in 1991-92 and within a short time won the first race on Kasana Choice in 1992.

At present he rides for the stables of LRC chairman Tariq Aziz, Masood Pervez, Raja Khushbakht-ur-Rehman, Chaudhry Mohammad Qasim, Mian Maahir Ahmed, etc.

Shahid told Dawn that his was a quest for creating more records, a campaign he is still continuing.

Shahid is the second jockey in Pakistan, who has reached the 100 victories mark. The first was Karachi jockey Syed Hasnain Shah. Among the Lahore trainers statistics log for the year 2007-08 Sohail Aziz is leading with 56 wins to his credit.

Son of a trainer, Sohail Aziz started his career as a riding boy. Within few years, he was promoted as a jockey and after giving up riding, joined the ranks of trainers treading in the footsteps of his father.

Talking to Dawn Sohail said he had been successful abiding by the old saying of fortune favours the brave. He defined his tactics by running horses in spots and reaping benefits in the art he learned from his father.

He said he had won almost all the classics and the Queen Elizabeth Cup five times. But the Pakistan Derby has eluded him, twice his horses were placed second and it was his wish to win the Derby... may be the next year.—AG
