THATTA, May 24: Sindh Culture and Tourism Minister Sassui Palijo has said that Karachi is getting more than 1,200 cusecs of water per day from Keenjhar Lake situated in Thatta district while the district itself and Badin are getting only 250 cusecs per day.

She said this could only be termed discriminatory as the two districts were facing a drought-like situation.

The minister was addressing an open katchehry in Gharo on Friday.

She said that due to the bad planning of previous government Thatta and Badin districts were facing acute water shortage.

She said that the Sindh chief minister in a recent meeting with the prime minister had pleaded the case of acute water shortage in Sindh and demanded the distribution of water as per 1991 water accord.

The minister disclosed that a committee had been constituted to furnish recommendations for the regularisation of katchi abadis (slums) and an official announcement was expected by next month.

She said that almost all the villages around district Malir, Gharo and Thatta would be regularised.

She announced the establishment of an auditorium and library in Gharo town.

She claimed that her party was striving hard to provide justice to every one at their doorstep.

Elimination of discrimination, promotion of recreational sites, health and education reforms and better law and order in the province were her government’s priority, she said.

Sassui Palijo claimed that the Thatta district government from time to time had obstructed the cleansing of riverine network of her constituency, Mirpur Sakro and Gharo, but her government had directed the irrigation department to ensure prompt supply of irrigation water in the area.
