Naveed, Zahid shine as ABL sense win

LAHORE, Oct 23: Hurricane batting by all-rounder Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan and later a deadly spell by left-arm spinner Mohammad Zahid consolidated Allied Bank’s position against Sui Gas on the penultimate day of the Patron’s Trophy Grade-I match at LCCA Ground Tuesday.

Allied Bank’s five wickets added 209 to their overnight 233 for five thanks to a belligerent 83 off 82 balls by Rana Naveed. The final total of 442 left the bankers with a commanding first innings lead of 187.

Zahid then claimed four for 36 to reduce Sui Gas to 113 for five in their second innings at stumps. On the last day tomorrow, Sui Gas need another 74 runs to avert an innings defeat.

Opener Kamran Sajid, batting with 57, is Sui Gas’ last hope. The young left-hander, who made century on first-class debut last week, has so far occupied the crease for 174 minutes and faced 141 balls.

His partnership with the experienced Mohammad Hussain (29) had yielded 43 runs in 39 minutes for the sixth wicket.

Earlier, Rana Naveed cracked five fours and two sixes in his 135-minute stay at the crease. He was involved in an eighth wicket stand of 85 in 80 minutes with Arshad Khan (28).

Skipper Aqib Javed (23 not out) and Mohammad Zahid, who lash three sixes and as many fours in his 50-ball 37 added 41 for the last wicket in just 30 minutes

Off-spinner Kashif Shafi finished with five for 142.
