OKARA, May 20: Hundreds of Kulana Estate tenants on Tuesday protested against alleged firing by “goons hired by the allottees of agricultural land” at Chak 28-A/2R.

Reports said tenants, both male and female, took to the GT Road and obstructed the vehicular passage to express their ire against harassment. They said some proclaimed offenders, backed by the Kulana Estate allottees, opened fire on the tenants of Chak 28-A/2R, damaging electricity wires installed by Wapda.

On receiving information, a police contingent, led by Saddar Circle DSP Muhammad Irfan and DSP (Traffic) Iqbal Zafar, placated the club-bearing tenants and restored the traffic.

Kulana Estate tenants president Malik Saleem Jakkhar and secretary Liaquat Kasmana told newsmen that a number of gangsters had been harassing the tenants for the last two days.

“The tenants and their families are in shock over the incident and there is no electricity and water at their homes,” they said.

The angry tenants left GT Road after two-hour long talks with the police and moved to the lawns along the Okara bypass intersection and staged a sit-in. They said they would continue their protest till the arrest of the culprits.

The protesters were in the lawns till last reports came in at night.

SP (Investigation) Chaudhry Muhammad Zulfiqar Ali Gujjar said patrol teams would make sure no such incident took place in the areas inhabited by the tenants.
