HYDERABAD, May 14: Sindh Minister for Social Welfare Ms Nargis N.D. Khan has said that the registration of 80 per cent inactive NGOs will be cancelled after making amendment to relevant law.

She said at the Circuit House after arrival in the city on Tuesday that about 7,000 NGOs were registered in the province and 80 per cent of them were inactive.

In future, the NGOs would be registered only for three years, their accounts would be audited and their performance would be checked strictly, she warned.

She said that the role of NGOs in the country’s development could not be ignored and no change could be brought about in society without public support.

Shaheed Benazir Bhutto sacrificed her life for democracy and the rights of people and the party’s manifesto of “Roti, Kapra aur Makan” would be implemented in letter and spirit, she stressed.

To a question, Ms Khan said that the decisions taken at jirgas were totally illegal, therefore, the judicial system would be strengthened to dispense cheap justice to people.Lack of education had led to increase in poverty, unemployment and sense of deprivation in Sindh, she said. Rural women would be given loans on easy instalments for the purchase of sheep and goats and the educated among them would be imparted training for two years, she said.

They would receive Rs4,000 to Rs6,000 per month stipends during the training period, she said.

She said that a real democratic government had come into power, which was committed to work for the welfare of people without discrimination. People would witness visible changes in due course of time and her ministry would set up medical camps and reactivate dormant centres, she said.

Later, she presided over a meeting of the district social welfare officers of Hyderabad, Tando Allahyar, Badin, Tando Mohammad Khan and Matiari and directed them to submit their performance reports.
