LAHORE, April 27: Federal Law Minister Dr Khalid Ranjha said here on Saturday that power would be transferred before October this year as a result of the general elections.

The minister was talking to reporters after speaking at the convocation of an educational institution at Aiwan-i-Iqbal.

He said the April 30 referendum would be different from that by Gen Ziaul Haq and power would be transferred before October 2002. “This will happen in the light of the judgment by the Supreme Court which the government fully respected.”

Mr Ranjha said those who were opposing the referendum had made the results of Gen Zia’s referendum a part of the constitution through the assemblies.

When asked about the opposition parties decision on Friday to reject the referendum, he said they (political parties) did not represent the people who would vote in favour of the president on April 30.
