KARAK, May 2: A row between District Nazim Rehmat Salam and his deputy Advocate Jan Alam over a no-confidence motion against the latter is likely to take an ugly turn as Alam’s group says that he would continue to work as convener of the council till the disposal of a petition in the Peshawar High Court (PHC).

The two groups headed for a showdown, after the district nazim ordered the police to get the convener’s office vacated, but some senior elected representatives, including Tehsil Karak Nazim Abdur Rehman Khattak, intervened to prevent an ugly situation, sources in the district council said on Friday.

Talking to journalists in his office, the Naib Nazim, Jan Alam, said that he would continue to work as the convener of the council till the disposal of his petition in the Peshawar High Court in which he had prayed the court that he was removed from the office through an illegal no-confidence motion.

He said he was discharging his duties according to a verdict of the Peshawar High Court of November 13, 2007, which had given him an interim relief on a petition that no adverse action should be taken against the petitioner.

Jan Alam added that he would accept the verdict of the court, but he would not bow to the ‘undemocratic tactics’ of the district nazim, who indulged in violation of the Local Government Ordinance 2001.

He said that an FIR had been lodged against the district nazim in Jhand police station, Attock district, on charges of snatching weapons from the police; attempt to set a police station ablaze and other crimes.
