KHAIRPUR, April 23: The Khairpur Civil Hospital turns away many seriously injured patients and refers them to Sukkur, Nawabshah and Larkana since the hospital lacks a number of specialist doctors including an orthopaedic surgeon to handle such cases, sources reveal on Wednesday.

One post each of skin specialist, senior anaesthetist, pathologist, orthopaedic surgeon, ophthalmologist, gynaecologist, senior RMO, CWMO, dental surgeon, head nurse, night supervisor, public health supervisor, six posts of WMO, 20 posts of staff nurse, 10 posts of ward boys and eight posts of midwives had been vacant in the hospital for five years, sources said.

The hospital’s civil surgeon Dr Aijaz Gajani blamed government ban on appointments for vacant posts and said that Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah would soon be briefed about the situation.

They were hopeful the hospital’s problems would be solved, he added.

The chairman of Khairpur Civil Society, Mir Munawar Talpur, demanded that the health department should fill the vacant posts in the hospital on an emergency basis.

Established June 8, 1958, the Civil Hospital was named Darul Falah. At present City Hospital and Lady Willington hospital are also working under the hospital, which caters to the needs of patients from the eight talukas of the district.

DEATH: The vice-chancellor of the Shah Abdul Latif University, Prof Dr Nilofar Shaikh, has expressed grief over the murder of Dr Safdar Kiyani, the pro-vice chancellor of Balochistan University.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, she said that the 30 year long services of Dr Kiyani for the cause of education could never be forgotten.
