LRC stipendiary steward resigns

Published April 24, 2002

LAHORE, April 23: The Lahore Race Club (LRC) stipendiary steward Basheer A. Mullick has resigned under controversial circumstances and his resignation was accepted by the LRC stewards.

Basheer is the brother of a former LRC steward and a senior LRC member, Rafique A. Mullick.

Rafique developed differences on racing matters with some of his colleagues when he was a steward. For most of his term as steward he stayed away and did not attend races. After the expiry of his term of stewardship he did not seek re-elections.

Since then, it was reported, Basheer had been feeling uneasy due to what he had allegedly said “ too much interference” by the stewards in his work.

On the other hand some stewards were critical of Basheer’s judgment and thought “he had grown too old to officiate as the stipendiary steward”.

However, the majority of the LRC stewards and key post officials are beyond the age of superannuation.—A.G.
