SYDNEY, March 30: Australian Olympic swimmer Nick D’Arcy was under police investigation after an early morning incident at a Sydney nightclub, Swimming Australia said Sunday.

Police said they were investigating an altercation which left former three-time 1998 Commonwealth Games champion Simon Cowley with facial injuries, including a suspected broken nose.

The incident came just hours after 20-year-old butterfly star D’Arcy was officially named in the Australian team for his first Olympics in Beijing following the eight-day selection trials.

Swimming Australia (SA) said it had begun its own investigation into the matter and would be assisting the New South Wales Police in their probe.

SA said it would consider disciplinary action upon completion of the police investigation and its own internal inquiries, adding that no other members of the Australian swimming team were involved in the incident.

As a result of the incident, D’Arcy on Sunday informed SA of his decision to withdraw from the team for the FINA World Short Course Championships in Manchester on April 9.

D’Arcy zoomed into Beijing Olympic medal calculations when he clocked the eighth-fastest 200-metre butterfly swim in history with a Commonwealth record of one minute 55.10 seconds in Tuesday’s final.—AFP
