PARIS, March 29: Former Formula One world champion Jacques Villeneuve confirmed Saturday that he will participate in the new Speedcar championship, a stock car formula close to the American NASCAR but which takes place in Asia and the Middle East.

Villeneuve will compete in the final two races of the season in Bahrain from April 4-6 and Dubai from April 11-12.

The 37-year-old Canadian won the Formula One world title in his second season in 1997. During his career from 1996 to 2006 he competed in 165 races, achieving 11 wins and finishing on the podium 23 times.

“The Speedcar races seem to be a big event and I’ve heard that it’s very enjoyable,” said Villeneuve. “It’s a formula which is just starting but I think it’s a very good idea.”

This is the first season of the Speedcar event and it has already attraced former Formula One drivers including Jean Alesi, Johnny Herbert, Stefan Johansson, Ukyo Katayama, JJ Lehto and Gianni Morbidelli.—AFP
