VEHARI, April 17: Thousands of commuters in the district and its adjoining areas like Kehror Pucca, Dunyapur and Khanewal faced problems as most of buses and wagons were impounded for April 19 public meeting of Gen Pervez Musharraf in Multan.

The police started impounding vehicles from various bus and wagon stands and at different roads on Tuesday night. Most of the drivers disappeared leaving their vehicles on the spot in a bid to avert the seizure. The passengers were the ultimate sufferers in the police-drivers hide and seek.

A group of commuters at Vehari bus stand told Dawn on Wednesday that there was no difference among Nawaz Sharif, Benazir Bhutto and the present rulers. “This is a cause of great inconvenience for the general public and it might go against the government in the referendum”, they said.

Most of the people have to hire taxis, rickshaws and other modes of transport to reach their destinations. Over 500 vehicles have so far been impounded.

Standing at the bus stop, schoolteacher Abida Bhatti termed the act on part of the administration illegal.

LOADSHEDDING: The people have voiced their disquiet over the unscheduled loadshedding in the district.

A group of people told Dawn here on Wednesday that 10 to 12 hours long power shutdown had made their lives miserable.

When contacted, Wapda officials said some time power supply was suspended due to the maintenance and repair works.

An insider alleged that Wapda officials were involved in power theft, but line losses were being recovered through unscheduled loadshedding.
