Yeh shaadi nahi ho sakti

SAHIWAL, March 13: A wedding ceremony at Rehman Kot ended in fiasco on Sunday when a man accompanied by his accomplices proved a real-life villain to a bridegroom just moments before the leave-taking of the bride. Amir Khan claimed at the ceremony that bride Amra (not real name) was his legal wife and at this groom Muhabat Khan and his guests left the bride’s house without taking her along with them.

This Bollywood-style fairytale came to the real life at the wedding of Amra, daughter of Ramzan Rehmani, who was to be wedded with Mohabat, of the village. When the ceremony was in progress, Amir, of Chah Nathu Wala, along with Azhar Khan Murdana, Union Council No 8 naib nazim, arrived there and claimed that he possessed a marriage deed or ‘nikah nama’ proving that the bride was his wife. Amra and her father denied his claim. But to their dismay, the bridegroom refused to take Amra with him and left the house.

Dawn learnt that two days before the wedding ceremony, Amir contacted village elder Haji Muhammad Ali and asked him to convey a message to the bridegroom that he had married Amra sometimes ago.

The village elder however conveyed this to the bride’s family without seeing any marriage deed. The bride’s family, however, shrugged off his claims. On the wedding day, when the bridegroom and his guests were at the bride’s house and were about to leave, Amir came there and warned the bridegroom to stop the ceremony as Amra was his wife. At this, the groom felt humiliation and refused to take the bride with them despite Amra’s family rejection of Amir’s claims. — Shafiq Butt
