PESHAWAR, March 11: In the wake of the twin bomb blasts in Lahore on Tuesday, the security in Peshawar has been beefed up with extra contingents of police personnel deployed at sensitive places, main intersections, important buildings and points of public gatherings.

A police official told Dawn that the Capital City Police Officer (CCPO), M Tanvir-ul-Haq, issued directives to all the station house officers, DSPs and other officers to further tighten the security in their respective jurisdictions to avert any untoward incident in the city.

According to the police official, temporary checkposts had been established at all the main entry and exit points to check the suspected people and ensure protection to life and property of the people.

The official said that police stations of Matni, Badbher and Sarband had been asked to adopt extra security measures in view of relatively high activities of outlaws in areas falling in their respective jurisdictions.

Meanwhile, the city police also claimed to have arrested over 45 suspected persons, including two proclaimed offenders (POs), from various localities of the city.

Khitab Gul, resident of Chandan Garhi, and declared a PO on July 27, 2007, was arrested by Daudzai police while another PO Zahid Almas, resident of Chamkani, was arrested by the Yakatut police.

Arms and ammunitions including 3 Kalashnikovs, 1 shotgun, 14 pistols of 30 bore, and hundreds of cartridges were also recovered from the possession of the arrested persons.
