LAHORE, March 5: Wapda and Army won their matches on the first day of the final round of the 16th national baseball championship at the Iqbal Park Sports Complex here on Wednesday.

Wapda were put through a tough fight by Police before earning a 7-6 win. They were on to a fine start, scoring two runs in the first innings — one each through Asif and Amman — while Police failed to score. But a run from Waqas helped them reduce the lead to 2-1 in the second innings.

The third innings proved eventful with five runs being scored — three by Wapda and two by Police. Abu Bakar, Sajid and Asif scored for Wapda to help them earn a 5-3 lead while Hafiz Mussadiq and Nasir added one each for Police.

While Wapda failed to earn any run in the next three innings, Police mustered three more to take a 6-5 lead. But two runs in the seventh innings by Asif and Sajid helped Wapda seal the match’s fate.

Meanwhile in the second match, Army outclassed Balochistan by 17-2.
