KARACHI, Feb 28: The first phase of the e-policing project, which envisages the computerisation and interlinking of all the police stations of Sindh including the Karachi region through the internet, will be completed in June.
The system will ensure an improved performance of the police department regarding the lodging of FIRs, investigation of crime, addressing public complaints and will also streamline the system of receiving feedback and monitoring of the performance of police stations.
After the computerisation process, all the complaints and FIRs registered with various police stations will be uploaded to a databank using a special software, which could be directly accessed by the higher authorities including the DPOs, RPOs, DIG and the inspector-general of police. In this manner, the high-ups can also keep a track of public complaints and their current status in various police stations.
The digitalisation will also help the police department in conducting investigations in various cases. In the case of any robbery, looting and snatching the police could immediately inform the rescue centre concerned including 15 and 915 to rush to the place of incident.
The project will cover 101 police stations of Karachi, 180 of Hyderabad and 210 police stations of Sukkur region.
All these police stations will be connected through the Global Information Systems (GIS) to the inspector-general police, Sindh, office in Karachi, where the performance of all these stations will be easily scrutinised and in case of any negligence on the part of the relevant police officials, immediate action can be taken against them
The centralised system will also keep checks on the patrolling of the police in their areas of jurisdiction, as their positions will appear on a screen in the main control room and any immediate order can easily be conveyed to the mobile vans.
Sindh police’s FM radio
In the second phase of the project, Sindh police will also start an FM radio in 2009, in collaboration with the information technology department for creating awareness among the people about incident reporting, precautionary measures for avoiding road accidents etc. It will also help in controlling crime, while on the other hand traffic diversion will also be announced by this FM radio in case of development works, traffic gridlock or any political and religious processions.
This FM radio will also help in controlling snatching and looting incidents by effectively monitoring the culprits by making informative announcements through the radio.
The rescue centre through GIS system will help curb crime and other untoward incidents. In case of any fire, building collapse or any natural disaster, etc, the rescue centre will pass on the relevant information to the nearby mobile vans, fire brigade and ambulance services.
Surveillance cameras
In third phase, the Sindh police in collaboration with the IT department will up-grade the traffic management system by installing 50 surveillance cameras.—PPI
