APDM not optimistic about boycott call

Published February 12, 2008

LAHORE, Feb 11: Although the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) has stepped up its campaign against the Feb 18 polls, it does not expect much response to its call. The alliance has called for the boycott of the Feb 18 elections.

Alliance sources believe that only the committed workers of the Jamaat-i-Islami, Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf (PTI) and nationalist parties will boycott the process while all others will exercise their right to vote.

A senior APDM leader said the supporters of the Jamaat and the PTI would vote for PML-N candidates because of the mission for which Nawaz Sharif was working.

The PML-N was also in favour of boycotting the polls, but reviewed its thinking after it failed to convince the PPP about the benefits of the move.

Mr Sharif said on a number of occasions that a partial boycott would not serve any useful purpose.

Only such leaders and workers are expected to boycott the polls as are bound by the discipline of their parties, according to an APDM leader.
