US bill on yuan peg

Published February 7, 2008

WASHINGTON, Feb 6: Legislation aimed at forcing China to revalue its currency is not far away in the US Senate, a senior Senator said on Wednesday.

The Senate Finance and Banking committees each have their own versions of legislation and Sen. Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat who sits on both panels, said he expects agreement on a single bill.

“I think we will be able to come to an agreement between the Senate Finance Committee and the Senate Banking Committee,” Schumer told the Reuters Regulation Summit in Washington.

“I think it won’t be that far away. We’ll be able to do something and yes I expect that we’ll move the bill,” Schumer said.
