Junaid, Umar shine in U-19 cricket

KARACHI, Jan 30: Off-spinner Junaid Ilyas’s five wicket-haul steered Zone-VI to a 43-run victory over Zone-VII on the last day of their two-day PCB Inter-district Under-19 Cricket Championship match (Karachi Region) at the KCCA Stadium on Tuesday.

Junaid finished with excellent figures of 5-55 in 28.5 overs as Zone-VII were bowled out for 178 in 71.5 overs chasing Zone-VI’s 221. Pacer Zakir Afridi extended Junaid good support with three wickets for 12 in his ten overs.Earlier, Talha Shafi top-scored for Zone-VI with a 183-ball 101 studded with nine boundaries.

Meanwhile, Zone-I defeated Zone-IV by five wickets at the Student Ground thanks to fine half-centuries by Umar Imtiaz and Waqas Khan for the winners.

Umar clubbed 10 boundaries in his 81 and Waqas’s 52 was laced nine fours as their team overhauled the total of 200 in 54.1 overs for the loss of five wickets.

In another match played at the TMC Ground on Tuesday, a unbeaten century from Zone-III’s Jahangir Shah went in vain as Zone-II overwhelmed them by 66 runs.

Zone-II, batting first, totalled 314-6 in 83 overs with Saeed Moutabir Khan top-scoring with a superb 124 containing 15 boundaries. Ammar Hasan (45) and Abdul Jabbar Khan (41) were the other main scorers.

Later, Jahangir Shah smashed 20 boundaries in his unbeaten 133. Anop Ravi also played well for his unbeaten half-century.

However, Zone-III failed to keep up with the required run-rate and consumed the allotted 83 overs scoring 248 runs for the loss of five wickets.

ZONE-II 314 for 6 in 83 overs (Saeed Moutabir Khan 124, Ammar Hasan 45, Abdul Jabbar Khan 41; Husbran Javed 2-69, Shoaib Rajput 2-67); ZONE-III 248 for 5 in 83 overs (Jahangir Shah 133 not out, Anop Ravi 50 not out; Latif Junejo 2-104).
