KARACHI, Jan 28: A suspected robber, who had scaled down the boundary wall of the Clifton house of a former Supreme Court chief justice, was caught red-handed on Monday night after a brief shootout, police and witnesses said.

Clifton SP Asif Aijaz Shaikh told Dawn that a neighbour called the police to inform of the presence of the intruder in the porch of the house of the late Mohammad Haleem, who served as the CJ of the apex court for the longest term, from 1981 to 1989.

He said the area DSP was on a routine patrol when he received a message from the police control and he rushed to the spot and surrounded the CJ’s house. “The police arrested the robber after an exchange of a few shots with him,” he added.

Clifton police said the suspect was identified as Irfan Baloch, hailing from Quetta.

DSP Javed Bhatti said the suspect fired two shots before he was captured. “A TT pistol and two rounds were seized from him,” he added.

He said Mohammed Akmal Rasheed, son of the late CJ, lived in the house with his family.

The police have registered a case against the suspected robber on the complaint of Mr Rasheed’s servant Tariq Hasan.

Meanwhile, A 23-year-old man committed suicide on Monday in Tashqand Colony, Keamari.
