‘Rigging plan in Gujrat exposed’

Published January 24, 2008

ISLAMABAD, Jan 23: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on Wednesday claimed to have exposed an election rigging plan in Gujrat by making public copies of the final voter list with blank columns of identity card numbers, addresses and parents’ names of the voters. It termed the list a solid evidence of rigging on part of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Q).

Speaking at a news conference here, PPP leader Babar Awan said the evidence had been presented in response to the statement of PML-Q Punjab president and former chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi that no opposition political party had any proof of the PML-Q planning to rig the elections. Mr Awan said the fake list, which contained the names of about 800 bogus voters in a single union council of Gujrat, had been provided to the chief election commissioner, adding that the list was the first solid proof of the rigging agenda of PML-Q.

He said the rigging evidences collected by a PPP team were an eye-opener for the international observers, adding more evidences would be collected from other districts in order to apprise the people and the international community of the rigging plan of the party.—Our Reporter
