MUMBAI, April 5: A suspected member of Osama bin Qaeda network who allegedly revealed a series of planned terrorist attacks was released on bail in India on Friday, his lawyer said.

A Mumbai court granted Mohammed Afroz Abdul Razzak indefinite bail after paying Rs100,000 ($2,040), lawyer Mobil Solkar told newsmen.

Afroz was arrested in October and authorities said he confessed to being a member of the Al Qaeda network.

Afroz’s release is a setback for Mumbai police who came under flak for booking him under a new controversial anti-terrorism law, but later dropped those charges saying they had made a mistake.

The court granted bail because of the failure by the police to file a charge sheet, Solkar said.

I moved the application today (Friday) in the court asking for his bail on a letter written by him requesting the judge to release him. The judge took notice of the application and released him on bail,” Solkar said.—AFP
