MELBOURNE, Jan 11: Australia’s former world number four Jelena Dokic lost in the qualifying round here on Friday and will miss out on next week’s Australian Open.

Dokic, bidding to return to the Open for the first time in four years, lost 6-2, 6-1 to Thailand’s experienced Tamarine Tanasugarn in the second round.

Dokic, who received a wildcard from the organisers to play in the qualifying matches, has been troubled by an ankle injury and could not practice in the lead-up tournaments. A one-time Wimbledon semi-finalist, Dokic has also been battling numerous personal problems.—AFP
