SIALKOT, Jan 7: A local court on Monday sent three Pakistan People’s Party activists to the district jail on a 14-day judicial remand for setting ablaze an election hall of Pakistan Muslim League-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain during a protest in Sambrial on Dec 28.

Violent protests erupted nationwide after PPP Chairwoman Benazir Bhutto’s assassination in a gun and bomb attack in Rawalpindi on Dec 27. Hussain is in the run for the National Assembly seat NA-112 (Sambrial-Sialkot).

Sambrial police registered a case against PPP activists Dilshad, Shabbir and Nasir under sections 148, 149, 337 H-II, 380, 436 and 440 of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of PML-Q local leader Muhammad Afzal Shaheen. Shaheen said the three PPP activists set fire to Hussain’s election hall in protest against Ms Bhutto’s assassination. — Correspondent
