RAWALPINDI, Dec 31: A four-member police team started investigation into the assassination of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto on Monday.

The team, headed by additional Assistant Inspector-General of CID Chaudhry Abdul Majeed, visited the site where Ms Bhutto had been killed.

The team is required to submit its report in seven days. The team also visited the DHQ hospital and recorded statements of people injured in the Dec 27 incident.

Hair and skin tissues, taken from four human legs and one hand found at the site, have been sent for DNA tests in Lahore.

“At this moment I can’t say anything. We are starting to investigate. I have just come back from Haj last night and received a briefing on the case,” the AIG told Dawn.

After visiting the site, the team went to the Police Lines where the bullet-proof in which she was leaving Liaquat Bagh has been kept.

Ms Bhutto’s shoes are still in the car which was impounded by police as ‘case property’. Her driver’s cap and some documents were also found in the vehicle, a source close to the investigators said.

He said the team would also try to identify the people who forced Ms Bhutto’s car to stop while she was leaving the rally.

The ambulance in which Benazir Bhutto’s coffin was taken to Chaklala Airbase has been kept off the road after it was damaged on its way to the airport.
