LAHORE, Oct 22: An accountability court on Monday extended till Nov 3 the judicial remand of PPP leader and former federal minister Jehangir Badar.
Mr Badar is accused of acquiring assets disproportionate to his known sources of income and misuse of authority as a federal minister.
Defence counsel Akram Sheikh opposed the request of the NAB for extension in remand. He submitted that the prosecution had failed to come up with a reference although it has been investigating the case for a long time. He said that Mr Badar should be released and there was no justification for keeping him in judicial custody.
Special prosecutor Haroon Rasheed Cheema said the NAB was entitled to the custody of the accused for 90 days for investigation. He said it was still less than 90 days since the accused was arrested and plea of delay could not be raised at present. He said the accused could approach the Lahore High Court for relief.
COOPERATIVES: The NAB filed on Monday a reference in an accountability court about a scam regarding the Services Commercial Credit Cooperative Ltd. SCCCL’s former officials Imtiaz Ilahi Jauhri, Inkisar Awan, Lt-Col Iftikhar Awan (retired), Parveen Shah Nawaz and Ijaz Awan are accused of causing a loss of Rs1.5 billion to the cooperative through misuse of funds.
Meanwhile, an accountability court ordered the release of Tariq Saeed, involved in a scam regarding misuse of funds of the Allied Commercial Credit Cooperative Ltd.
The NAB submitted before the court that the accused paid Rs2.5 million out of a total of Rs5 million attributed to him. It said the accused has given guarantees for payment of the remaining amount.
An accountability court issued notices to the NAB for Oct 27 on the acquittal plea filed by Pasbaan Cooperative’s former official Sheikh Mansoor.
Charges have been framed in the case.
