BAHAWALPUR, Dec 28: The charged PPP activists blocked Karachi-Lahore main track, damaged railway communication system, five cars, ATM of two banks besides ransacking offices of the railway and tehsil city nazim here on Friday.

Reports said that a group of PPP activists, after parading the Circular Road, reached the railway station platform where they threw passengers’ benches and TV sets installed there on the track and blocked the rail traffic for some two hours.

The angry mob also damaged the communication system at the Assistant Station Master office that brought the train service to a halt.

Another charged group of PPP activists damaged ATMs of two banks and five cars at Farid Gate.

The PPP also organized a condolence camp at the Fawwara Chowk where funeral prayers of Benazir Bhutto were also offered.

Throughout the day, different groups of PPP activists set ablaze used tyres, blocked roads, tore up banners of PML-Q candidates at several crossings, including Farid Gate, Hussaini Chowk, Fawwara Chowk, General Bus Stand and other places of Ahmedpur East and Yazman.

Participants of rallies shouted anti-government slogans and demanded the arrest of Benazir’s killers.

Although heavy police contingents were deployed at important places, they took no action against PPP workers for damaging the public property.

ASP Muhammad Kashif said they had instructions not to take action against protesters. However, he said the law would take its own course if the public property was damaged.
